A month ago we lost 'em.
Yeah, a month ago.
Actually, a bit more.
But roughly a month.

They'd gone on patrol, you see.
Six of 'em, in a Warrior.
We stayed back at base.
Back where we had no idea.

Then the explosion.
An IED for sure.
That short one, with no echo.
At least it seemed that way.

News came back.
The patrol had been caught.
My heart sunk and nausea crashed down.
The patrol had been caught.

We went to see the remains.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to.
But sure enough, was the twisted carcass.
Of what was once a Warrior.

We stared. We stared for ages.
Nobody spoke, not even a whisper.
Six of 'em had left this morning.
Six of 'em were dead.

And here I am, writing this.
A month after, actually more.
Their numbers still in my phone.
Wilf, JJ, Anton.

It's weird. It's so weird.
They're not dead, but they are.
Your mind knows they're gone.
But your concious says no.

Maybe they are still here?
Maybe they're spirits?
Maybe they're looking after us?
No, correct that.

They are looking after us.

This is a little poem I wanted to write after hearing Joel saying how strange and weird it was for him, and how he still had their phone numbers saved. This poem was actually improvised as I wrote it. I didn't plan it, I just wrote it there and then. Normally I would say 'I'll probably come back and change it later' - but no. I want it to stay like this.
